EVENTS
Dennis organizes a variety of astronomy events for schools and colleges.
.
Please contact him for more details.
1. Star Nights
.
These are observing evenings for groups of
children and adults.
.
Dennis brings a computer-controlled telescope
to give spectacular views of the Moon,
planets, nebulae, star clusters and galaxies.
.
If the weather is poor, then we have a programme
Photo: Mike Cooke that includes presentations and a look at Photo: Mike Cooke
the virtual night sky.
2. Astronomy Masterclass
.
This project has been pioneered by Appleby Grammar School.
It has inspired hundreds of students who have taken part over many years.
.
The students stay overnight at Derwentwater Youth Hostel in the Lake District.

.

On the first day, Dennis provides presentations

and activities that cover the astronomy topics

in GCSE Physics.

.

Dennis's colleague, Andy Green, gives star shows

in StarDome Planetarium.

.

In the evening the students enjoy an observing

session using computer-controlled telescopes

and Andy introduces them to astrophotography.

.

On the second day, the students are involved in a

project to enhance their learning of a specific topic

and present their findings to the whole group.

.

The response of students is always very positive and Masterclass has helped

inspire students to study Physics at A Level and beyond.

3. Star Days

..

Dennis spends an extended period of time with a school group,

perhaps a whole day or half day.

.

Using the activities that have proved successful with Masterclass,

the students cover astronomy topics in the Physics GCSE syllabus.

.

These topics include satellites and their orbits, the life cycle of stars

and the Big Bang Theory.
